Invigorating Small Spaces
A house is really just a collection of small spaces that add up to a home. Each space has a purpose that sometimes needs to be updated or re-thought as the demands of the family evolve. One might call these “small projects,” and many technically are: miscellaneous design work, cabinetry, tile work, small remodels, etc. But that doesn’t mean these project don’t still need some invigoration.
The results still must look beautiful and perform functionally, gracefully, with no useless space. As with larger projects, Bruce listens to the needs of the client, evaluates the space where the work is needed, and takes note of surrounding architectural influences that help guide the design process. Every space counts, no matter how small.
Below are a few examples of invigorating smaller spaces.
“ I am so glad I chose Bruce to update my master bathroom. From the initial consultation to the final walkthrough, Bruce brought a thorough attention to detail. Because of his design expertise, he was able to make suggestions for what would fit best and his extensive building abilities eliminated almost the entire need for subcontractors. And when they were required, Bruce was present at all times so I knew there would be no miscommunications. I am extremely happy with my beautiful new bathroom and would choose Bruce for any project in my house.”
Small Space: Invigorating An Entrance
The front door entered into a large ‘room’ with no place to land coats, hats, and shoes. Bruce designed, constructed and installed this mudroom to organize the piles of clothing, and create an additional room behind. The cabinets above are used for seasonal articles, accessed by a stool that fits neatly into the space below the bench without taking up valuable storage space.

Small Space: Invigorating A Formal Entrance
The main entrance to this home was naked to the harsh coastal environment of Gloucester harbor. Taking cues from architectural elements around the house and the existing doorway facade, a portico roof was designed to warmly embrace both visitors and homeowners alike.

Small Space: Invigorating A Television Stand
This simple yet elegant built-in cabinetry reflects the textures of the coast, while providing a much needed boost in storage to a room that is ringed by windows overlooking the ocean. Bruce produces CAD drawings of cabinetry prior to construction. These are approved by the owners, then used by him for precise construction of the work.
Small Project: Invigorating A Flat Wall
A small window in a flat wall was all that framed the view to the back yard, limiting any afternoon sunlight from penetrating the room. This side of the living room had no draw, -a dead space- used solely for the Christmas tree. By opening up the wall to the back yard views, bumping the window out one foot, and building cabinets on either side, an incredibly inviting deep window seat/couch/bed begs for a visitor or two to come get cozy!
Small Project: Invigorating A Path
The deck off the main living floor had a great view of the lake, but no easy way to get there.
Now there is.
Bruce designed, constructed, and painted the entire project.

Small Project: Invigorating A Bedroom Clothing Storage Challenge
The owners wanted to clean up the traditional his and her dressers which crowded the room. The idea was to create a custom cabinet that would cater to their wardrobe, be unassuming, becoming part of the wall. Big drawers, little drawers, adjustable shelves, jewelry niche, and window seat created the new ‘wall’.
No more clutter.
Bruce did it all.
Small Project: Invigorating A Shower
The shower was built with a cute beach house decor for when it was a beach house. It is still a house on the beach, but now it is a year round residence, and due for an update…but with a contemporary beachy feel.
The large tiles will cover space quickly, but they do not conform to irregularities in the walls, so great attention to detail before the tiling process starts is paramount to a successful installation. And perfectly plumb jambs makes the glass installation a simple process.
